Good Sammy Maddington: Same same, but different

Good Sammy Maddington: Same same, but different blog cover photo

When the news broke that the Anglicare stores were closing down in June, it was a real bummer for the Maddington community. Not only was the Maddington op shop the only one in the suburb; it was a treasure trove of goodies, run by a friendly team of dedicated workers who always made customers feel right at home. Luckily, Good Sammy quickly stepped in to bring the joy of op shopping back to the community.

Located right across from the Stockland shopping centre at 80 Attfield Street, Good Sammy Maddington is a prime go-to spot for all your thrifting needs and desires. The store has got the same wide selection of second-hand goodies, including quality clothing and accessories, homewares, books, toys, bric-a-brac and so much more! Clothing is arranged by colour, so it’s easy to find items that match your seasonal colour palette and explore new options.

One of the best parts about the transition is that the familiar team of workers and volunteers remains largely the same. Regulars can expect to be greeted by the friendly faces they’ve grown fond of over the years, ensuring that the warm and welcoming atmosphere continues.

Pat, who’s been the Manager of the Maddington store for seven years, is quick to point out that even though signage has changed, the spirit of the store remains the same, with customers commenting on the same friendly service and affordable prices. It’s same same, but (slightly) different to the former Anglicare store and it’s a reassuring consistency that keeps the store thriving.

Pat loves her customers and her team, who she describes as family. The fact that the store has 18 volunteers says everything about the camaraderie in the store. They’re not just there to lend a hand, they genuinely enjoy what they do, and that’s why the store always looks spick and span. Pride in their work is what keeps Good Sammy Maddington a top-notch op shopping spot. It’s a pleasure walking through the store and sifting through the racks. And believe me, there’s plenty to be found with a bit of sifting.

A popular new addition is Good Sammy’s Gold Seal collection. Shoppers can find both affordable and designer items all under one roof, including labels such as Kookai, Decjuba, Lorna Jane, Guess and more. Here are some gems I spotted during my time in the store.

And don’t miss the bric-a-brac section. It’s packed with fun retro finds, like old-school cookie jars, plate sets, glassware, macrame wall hangings and even 80’s greeting cards that’ll take you back in time.

Good Sammy Maddington caters to a diverse mix of customers, from young families to the elderly – all of whom seem to really enjoy visiting the store. And who can blame them? It feels good to find quality bargains while and supporting sustainability and disability inclusion. In case you didn’t know it, all money raised in Good Sammy stores goes right back into creating job opportunities for Western Australians living with disabilities. So, it’s not just a shopping experience; it’s a chance to make a positive impact in the community while finding some excellent bargains.

Whether you’re a local or visiting from other parts of Perth, a trip to Good Sammy Maddington is a must. I highly recommend making a day of it and exploring the nearby op shop strip in Kenwick and the Good Sammy outlet store in Gosnells.

Plan your next thrifting adventure and go pay Pat and the team a visit today.

Good Sammy also took over the former Anglicare op shop in Morley, a great addition to your Op Shop tour whilst you are in the area bargain hunting!
