Employee Profile: Ebony from Good Sammy Wanneroo
If you’ve visited Good Sammy Wanneroo recently, it’s likely you’ve been greeted by Ebony. The Banksia Grove local with enviable long blonde hair and a beaming smile is a well-liked member of the team and she’s come a long way in the three and a half years she’s worked in the store.
Ebony has autism and when she first started at Wanneroo, she lacked confidence in her abilities and refused to do any task without a mentor. Now, she not only completes tasks on her own, she also uses her initiative to find things that need attention in store and she tends to them promptly, or has them added to the daily task list. She’s even become somewhat of a mentor herself, using her knowledge of the ins and outs of the store to help new participants grow in skill and confidence.
“She’s a pleasure to work with”, says Alex, the Manager of Good Sammy Wanneroo. Under Alex’s guidance, Ebony has achieved several employment goals, from sorting clothing to pricing handbags and most recently, learning how to price furniture based on its quality. Ebony’s greatest achievement to date is mastering the till. Alex says, “This was a real challenge for her at first, but after one-on-one training, she gradually grew in confidence and after a year, she could do all eftpos transactions on her own.”
Not only has Ebony mastered eftpos transactions, she’s now also confident handling small cash sales. And while she still requires assistance from a colleague when it comes to larger cash transactions, involving 50- and 100-dollar notes, “most customers don’t mind”, she says.
Ebony loves working with the team at Good Sammy Wanneroo. “Everyone is so nice,” she says. “Whenever I go shopping in the city, the people in the shops are always so rude! They don’t even look at you.” Knowing how it feels to be ignored as a customer, Ebony has made it her mission to ensure that all her customers are made to feel welcome. It hasn’t gone unnoticed either.
Some customers have left glowing feedback on the back wall of the store. One writes, “I love Ebony. She makes the store so vibrant.” “Thank you Ebony”, writes another. “You gave me a beautiful customer experience and your smile and charm will warm many hearts.”
You can’t get much better feedback than that!
