Join the statewide thrift-off

What do you get when you put six of WA’s biggest charity op shops in the same room?

A lot of retro jackets, plenty of denim, and… the very first WA’s Favourite Op Shopper competition.

That’s right – for the first time ever, Good Sammy has teamed up with our op shop mates Salvos Stores, Vinnies, Paraquad, Red Cross and Save the Children (with a little help from Charitable Reuse Australia) to throw one big second-hand party.

Because this year isn’t just any year. It’s 100 years since Aussies first coined the term “op shop” back in Melbourne in 1925. And what better way to mark a century of thrifting joy than with a statewide search for WA’s ultimate bargain-hunting, treasure-finding, thrifting superstar?

How to enter (it’s easy peasy)

Whether you’re a vintage treasure hunter, a serial upcycler, or just love bragging that your $10 outfit gets more compliments than your mate’s designer gear – this comp is for you.

All you need to do is:

  1. Snap a pic of your best thrifted look, bargain find or upcycle project.
  2. Tell us in 25 words or less why you love op shopping.
  3. Upload it to worldopshopday.org/wa

Your photo will go into the online gallery, where WA can vote for their favourites. Plus, our judges will be picking some standout entries for special awards.

There are five prizes up for grabs, so your thrifty skills could actually pay off.

Why it matters (beyond the glory)

Sure, winning WA’s Favourite Op Shopper is cool (and we’d brag forever). But this is also about something bigger:

  • Keeping fashion fun and affordable.
  • Giving pre-loved treasures another chance to shine.
  • Supporting the charities that make WA a better place.

Every item you find, every dollar you spend, every donation you make has a ripple effect – creating opportunities for people with disability, funding vital services, and keeping clothes out of landfill.

And when you join in this competition, you’re not just showing off your style, you’re showing that WA chooses second-hand first.

World Op Shop Day – circle the date

The competition is all part of World Op Shop Day, happening for the very first time on Saturday 18 October 2025. Think of it as the birthday party op shops have been waiting a century to throw.

So get your entry in, polish your thrifting crown, and show WA why YOU deserve the title of Favourite Op Shopper.

Ready to claim the glory?

Entries are open now. Head to worldopshopday.org/wa and throw your (pre-loved) hat in the ring.

Because in WA, we don’t just op shop. We do it with style.
