Buy Nothing New Month: Time to shop smart, swap fast, and strut pre-loved

October isn’t just another month. It’s Buy Nothing New Month! A global movement that dares us all to hit pause on buying new (don’t panic, essentials excluded) and say yes to pre-loved. To repairing. To swapping. To donating.

If you love the thrill of a bargain hunt, the glow of a great find, or the smug joy of telling your mates your outfit cost less than lunch, this is your month. And Good Sammy is right in the middle of it.

World Op Shop Day is coming (18 October)

Circle it.
Highlight it.
Put it in your diary.

Saturday 18 October is the biggest day on the op shop calendar. Think Christmas morning, only with racks of pre-loved fashion waiting to be discovered.

Here’s your brief:

  • Hunt down treasures at your local Good Sammy.
  • Snap your haul and show it off.
  • Prove to your friends that second-hand really is the new new.

We’ll share more about what we’ve got planned as the day gets closer.

Could YOU be WA’s favourite op shopper?

Good Sammy has proudly led the launch of the WA’s Favourite Op Shopper competition – a state-wide celebration of second-hand style. We’ve teamed up with Salvos Stores, Vinnies, Paraquad, Red Cross and Save the Children, with the support of Charitable Reuse Australia, to shine a spotlight on the joy of shopping pre-loved and the positive impact it has on people and the planet.

Op shopping is part of our community spirit in WA. It’s where fashion, creativity and sustainability come together, and where every purchase supports charities doing vital work.

That’s why, to celebrate World Op Shop Day and 100 years since Australians coined the term ‘op shop’, we’re on the hunt for WA’s ultimate thrifting champion. The WA’s Favourite Op Shopper competition is your chance to show how you do it: your best finds, your clever upcycles, or simply the treasures you couldn’t leave behind. Together, we’re celebrating the way Western Australians choose second-hand first.

Donating this October

Buy Nothing New Month is also the perfect time to clear out what you no longer wear or use. Donating good quality clothing and homewares helps stock our shelves and keeps items in circulation for longer. And for our Good Club loyalty members, we have something special lined up this month when you donate great quality clothing. We will share more on that soon, so keep an eye out.

What’s happening around WA

BNNM is popping up everywhere this year, and you’ll spot Good Sammy in the thick of it:

  • Subiaco Textile Trail (6–12 Oct): Our Subiaco store will feature a clearance rack and a special “love rack” of gems.
  • Circular Fashion Festival (10–11 Oct): We’ll be at Yagan Square with a stall, plus we’ve supplied bold-coloured stock for a floral art piece big enough to stop traffic.
  • The Great Global Mend (11 Oct): A world record attempt for synchronised repairs. We’ll be on-site with a haberdashery stall to tempt crafty hands.
  • Wanneroo Bus Tour: Thanks to the City of Wanneroo, locals will explore op shops including our Wanneroo, Butler and Clarkson stores. Find out more and purchase tickets here.

These events aren’t only about clothes. They’re about sharing skills, meeting new people, and proving that second-hand has serious style.

Why Buy Nothing New?

Because it’s not about missing out. It’s about levelling up!

Every pre-loved purchase means:

  • Less landfill.
  • Less fast fashion churn.
  • More jobs and training for people with disability through Good Sammy.

That’s the magic of op shopping. Every donation, every purchase, every find is part of a bigger story.

How to join the fun

Whether you’re thrifting for budget-friendly basics, chasing a designer one-off, or just love the thrill of the hunt, second-hand is always a win.

Ready to Op, Drop and Shop?

This October, join the movement. Whether you’re donating, swapping, repairing, or showing off your latest haul, you’re making a difference.

Because Buy Nothing New Month isn’t about saying no. It’s about saying yes! Yes to community, yes to sustainability, and yes to creating more opportunities for people with disability.

See you in-store, thrifters. 💛
