Good Sammy Kwinana: The dark horse of op shops
Good Sammy Kwinana has quietly become a favourite among Perth op shoppers who travel from near and far to browse through the store’s racks for thrifty treasure.
The store boasts an impressive array of high-quality items that are priced to sell, and its tidy layout and size make it a breeze to navigate. Upon entering, shoppers are made to feel energized, welcomed and excited. The friendly staff play a big part of this vibe, making it a must-visit destination for anyone looking for unique and affordable finds.
Visitors have praised the team at Good Sammy Kwinana as lovely, delightful, helpful, thoughtful, and kind, with one shopper even dubbing them “the best in the West.” Their passion for their work is evident in the cheerful banter and laughter that can be heard throughout the store. It’s clear that the team takes pride in providing exceptional customer experience and creating a welcoming atmosphere for all who enter.
Kwinana Store Manager, Kim, has worked for Good Sammy for 15 years. Kim loves going to work and interacting with her team and customers who come from all walks of life. She says, “Kwinana is a friendly and welcoming store. We always lend a listening ear and we love to help our customers find those quirky wish list items.”
At Good Sammy Kwinana, one customer, Dot, has scored herself an original Rolling Stones denim jacket from their 1978 tour. Stephanie, another customer who pops in regularly, has bought a vintage three-piece Spanish-made cookware set, as well as a brand-new Witchery puffer, new Levi’s and multiple Ralph Lauren polo shirts all in excellent condition. “I could go on and on about the wonderful things I’ve bought from there,” Stephanie says. “They have a great selection and I’d say other shoppers feel the same way as every time I’m in, there are multiple people scoring bargains too.”
Jessica, the fashion-savvy Instagrammer behind @my.second.hand.life, is the latest Good Sammy Kwinana convert. Jessica visited the store for the first time a few months ago and was instantly blown away. “It wasn’t on my radar, so I expected to only pop in quickly”, she shares. “I ended up spending a good hour or so looking through their dresses and trying them on. I can’t wait to go back.” Below are some of gorgeous highlights of Jessica’s dress haul. Given that “Kwinana” originates from an Aboriginal word meaning “pretty maiden,” it’s no surprise that Good Sammy Kwinana stocks so many stunning dresses.
I found a pretty dress of my own during my visit to Good Sammy Kwinana; a floral print midi dress with loose sleeves and a front split. It’s become one of my go-to summer dresses and I always get compliments when I wear it. I love seeing people’s reactions when I tell them it cost $7 from Good Sammy Kwinana. As well as the dress, I also bought a vintage Daly Waters Pub singlet and a Sportsgirl blazer. I found the blazer in the Gold Seal section, which was choc-a-block full of gems from Witchery, Seed, Forever New, French Connection, Thanne, Decjuba, Kookai, Gorman and Oroton – all of which were priced between $10 and $25. It’s perhaps the best and most affordable Gold Seal section I’ve come across in a Good Sammy store and it took a lot of willpower to not buy everything. I mean, look at this genuine leather biker jacket, raffia tote and vintage dress!
Aside from Gold Seal and women’s fashion, Good Sammy Kwinana also has a great range of menswear, childrenswear, toys, books, homewares, and bric-a-brac items and new stock is put out daily.
If, like Jessica and me, you’re not familiar with Good Sammy Kwinana, I urge you to go and check it out. It’s a dark horse; a hidden thrifty treasure trove that will win you over and keep you coming back. Just don’t tell the locals I sent you. They might not be too happy that they’re secret is out.
