Good Sammy Mount Lawley: The bargain hunter’s hip and happy hunting ground

If you ask any Perth op shopper what their favourite op shop is, chances are they’ll say Good Sammy Mount Lawley.

This store, at 768 Beaufort Street, is beloved by many local op shoppers and they all have different reasons for loving it.

Take loyal customer Terry, for example. She loves the store’s diverse selection of women’s clothing which is organised according to garment type and colour.

Tina, on the other hand, loves scouring the Gold Seal section, the homewares and the discount racks at the back of the store, while Helen enjoys checking out the fantastic range of books.

Becky, Em and Kelly can’t get enough of the kids’ section, which is chock-a-block full of high-quality kidswear, books and toys, and Tez enjoys having a giggle with the friendly staff.

Linda, and a handful of other loyal customers, can’t recall ever leaving the store empty-handed.

When I visited this store for the first time, I could see what these shoppers were talking about. The store has an epic selection of women’s clothing, including wedding gowns and formalwear. Seriously girls, this is THE place to find your school ball dress – or bridesmaid dress for that matter. There are so many to choose from!

The Gold Seal range is also impressive and known to stock high quality Aussie labels such as Wheels & Dollbaby, Scanlan & Theodore and RM Williams, as well as luxury designer brands such as Prada and Louis Vuitton… no joke.

The racks are restocked every day – both from in-store donations and Good Sammy warehouse stock, so Store Manager Teaghen encourages shoppers not to be put off if their first visit isn’t a successful one.

“Most of our stock is based on the volume of donations we receive and there are a lot of circumstances which affect that. If you don’t find something that first time make sure you come again. It might be case of second or third time lucky” – Teaghen, Store Manager

Mount Lawley’s kids’ section is great too, tucked away in its own little area with a TV and toys to keep your little ones entertained while you scour the racks. It’s just past the store’s book collection, which is just as fantastic as customer, Helen says it is.

The books are neatly stacked in alphabetical order so you can easily search for that sought-after title, and there’s a comfy chair to sit if you want to take your time flicking through the pages. The store also has a great range of linen, haberdashery, knick-knacks and kitchen items. According to op shopper Tina, this section seems to always have the obscure item you’re looking for.

However, what I found surprising is that no one mentioned the store’s epic men’s section. It was the first thing I noticed when I walked in, because it’s HUGE! It takes up one whole side of the store and it’s fully stocked with everything from Gold Seal items and formalwear to casual attire and workwear.

This flat lay showcases just some of the many gems that can be found in the men’s section of this store: a Levi’s T-shirt, Levi’s 504 jeans, Converse Chuck Taylor’s (new) and a vintage bomber jacket.

If you need to convince your significant other to go op shopping with you, just show them this photo and they’ll join you in a heartbeat.

But it’s not just men who can benefit from looking through the men’s section. As revealed in ‘How to shop like a thrift-fluencer’ it’s a great place for ladies to score stylish oversized shirts, baggy pants, leather belts, sneakers and loafers. It’s definitely worth a look.

Good Sammy Mount Lawley is a neat and well-presented store that’s easy to find your way around, and there are price charts throughout the store to help customers keep track of their spending (because there’s nothing worse than bill shock). There are also six spacious fitting rooms as well as parking spaces and donation collection points at the rear of the store for shoppers’ convenience.

An avid thrifter herself, Store Manager Teaghen aims to give her customers the positive shopping experience she’d want if she were a customer.

“My team do a wonderful job of making customers smile, manifesting gems and offering a great thrifting experience. Recycling is huge for me and my team, so being able to see such incredible product and knowing it’s going to end up in someone’s grateful hands is a joy. We are happy to be able to make a difference in that area” – Teaghen, Store Manager

It’s also the customers who make a difference, because their donations and purchases help provide training and employment opportunities for Western Australians living with a disability. Of the 11 employees at Good Sammy Mount Lawley, five of them have disabilities, so by shopping at this store, you get to interact with the very people your purchases and donations help support. How awesome is that?

Plan your visit to Good Sammy Mount Lawley today and see what all the fuss is about. Or, consider volunteering at the store and contribute to the amazing work Good Sammy is doing to improve employment outcomes and inclusion for people with disability.
