Good Sammy Port Kennedy: a coastal family favourite
Leanne certainly knows her stuff when it comes to Good Sammy op shops. Having spent the last 27 years working in Rockingham, Perth Metro, Kwinana, Booragoon, Mandurah and now the Port Kennedy store, you can trust her when she describes Good Sammy Port Kennedy as a family-friendly store with something to please everyone.
She’s spot on. This store has all the preloved fashion you can poke a stick at – and all the homewares, books and toys. It has a huge clearance section for shoppers who are on a budget and a decent Gold Seal section for shoppers who are happy to pay a little more for curated designer items. All of these things are appealing, but what sets Good Sammy Port Kennedy apart from other op shops is its epic range of fancy dress, swimwear and unique bric-a-brac items.
Good Sammy Port Kennedy has a huge range of swimwear and wetsuits – the biggest I’ve seen in an op shop. It also stocks well-known surf brands like Billabong, Rusty, Quiksilver and Roxy, which makes sense given it’s only a six-minute drive to the nearest beach. That one’s a nudist beach, mind you, so if you’ve worked up a sweat shopping for pre-loved gems, you can go and enjoy a dip in your birthday suit 😛
The store’s fancy dress section is impressive too. Stocked with fairy tutus, animal onesies and everything in between, it’s THE place to come for your Book Week or Halloween costumes.
If, like me, you’re not much of a knick-knack person, you might change your mind when you see the store’s bric-a-brac section. So many items stood out to me, including retro vases, vintage plate and tea sets, and kitsch animal ornaments. This store should definitely be on the radar of Perth collectors.
Leanne, the Store Manager, loves the pleasant surprises that come with running the Port Kennedy store. She says, “The work is always varied and you never know what donations will come in through the back door.”
Leanne looks after a team of 11 paid employees and a handful of dedicated volunteers who followed her from the Mandurah store. She says, “we have an amazing team. Our participants are always happy and smiling, and up for a laugh, and the rest of the staff and volunteers have a really good work ethic.”
The store is known to receive clothing by Witchery, Zara and Peter Alexander, handbags by Mimco, Guess, Mulberry and Marc Jacobs – and footwear by Adidas, Nike, Puma and Dr Martens. The team sort donations and refresh the racks every day, so Leanne recommends visiting the store regularly and taking your time browsing to discover a real gem.
Check out the gems I walked away with following a recent visit. This haul came to a grand total of $25.50. Pretty impressive, huh? Why not drop in and say hello to Leanne and the team and do some treasure hunting of your own? You’re sure to be pleasantly surprised by what you’ll find.
