Good Sammy Mandurah: Service with a genuine smile

If there’s an op shop that embodies community spirit and service with a smile, it’s Good Sammy Mandurah.

Located at 120 Pinjarra Road, this store is bright, clean and tidy and it’s as famous for its excellent customer service, in addition to its range of quality pre-loved gems.

Good Sammy Mandurah attracts a wide range of customers – from locals who drop by to have a chat and a browse, to holiday-makers who pop in to grab whatever they missed while packing. Store Manager Naomi says, “We seem to be the first port of call for out-of-towners who’ve forgotten to pack things like jumpers, cutlery or sheets.”

If it’s extra clothing you need for your getaway or just in general, Good Sammy’s got you covered. It has a huge range of women’s, men’s and children’s clothing for all types of weather and occasions. I intended on making one flat lay during my time in store, but I was so spoilt for choice that I ended up putting together three different looks.

Good Sammy Mandurah also stocks an array of toys, homewares and general sundries. One holidaymaker, who popped in recently to get an extra set of sheets, was chuffed to come across a tub of collectable teaspoons for $1 each. She said, “My Nan’s been collecting them for years, so I bought a few to add to her collection. I also bought a nice summer dress to wear on my holiday. I was stoked!”

Naomi and Assistant Manager Terry look after a team of ten. Five of these employees have a disability and they make everyday fun, uplifting and rewarding for them. “We are blessed with a team that acts more like a family”, says Naomi.  “We look out for each other and we always have a great time at work. The Mandurah community is fantastic, too.”

You can really feel the community spirit when you visit Good Sammy Mandurah. There’s a number of regular customers who pop in weekly, and sometimes daily, to say hello to Naomi and the team and check out the new donations – especially Gold Seal items. I felt special when I visited the store for the first time and was greeted by the lovely and always-smiling Terry. The customers were also very friendly, with a few asking my opinion on items they’d picked out for themselves.

Jess, a thriftfluencer @my.second.hand.life and regular customer of Good Sammy Mandurah, loves the store’s “super friendly atmosphere.” She’s also a big fan of the well-stocked Gold Seal section, which boasts high-quality vintage pieces and designer brands such as Ginger and Smart, Emporio Armani, Guess, Tommy Hilfiger and Mela Purdie to name a few – and many items still have their tags attached. “I often find incredible labels at very reasonable prices”, Jess says. “I try to go in as often as I can to snap them up before they’re spotted by someone else with an eye for labels.”

A handful of resellers are also known to frequent Good Sammy Mandurah to find stock for their online stores. Store Manager Naomi says, “We are known for our well-priced Gold Seal labels, but we also have plenty of nice brands on our regular racks. We have about four resellers who purchase stock from our store and make a profit from selling them in their online stores. Our good pricing allows them to do that.”

Good Sammy Mandurah assists the local community in many ways. Not only does it provide locals with a great range of high-quality recycled fashion at very reasonable prices, it also raises vital funds for people with disability and provides them with employment opportunities. The store is currently in talks with the City of Mandurah to host a series of youth-based fashion workshops and activations that promote sustainable fashion.
