Setting a new standard for accessibility at Good Sammy

In October Good Sammy Enterprises proudly completed an historic upgrade of our Canning Vale Head Office – a transformative project designed to future-proof our facilities and set a new benchmark for accessibility.

Driven by our commitment to inclusive employment, this initiative aimed to create spaces that not only met, but exceeded, accessibility standards for our teams and visitors.

Designed with our team in mind

The Canning Vale Head Office upgrade reflects our ongoing commitment to creating inclusive, welcoming spaces for everyone. By codesigning spaces with our team and incorporating thoughtful design features, we’ve built a workplace that better supports accessibility, wellbeing and community connection.

This milestone not only celebrates progress – it also sets the foundation for a more inclusive future.

Deb’s story: a champion for inclusion and community

One of our valued team members, Deb (pictured at the new entrance to our Canning Vale Head Office), was recently recognised for 20 years for service with Good Sammy. Deb works part-time in two roles at our Canning Vale office – supporting operations in the newly upgraded canteen on Mondays and preparing donated clothing in the warehouse on other days.

I enjoy the work, especially being in the canteen and connecting with our community,” Deb said.

I’m also a strong advocate for deaf-blind awareness, particularly for white cane users.”

Deb’s passion for accessibility advocacy played a meaningful role in shaping the renovation. Her insights directly influenced several design choices including increasing font sizes on signage, incorporating braille, and enhancing the use of tactile and contrasting pavers.

Expanding accessibility across our network

This upgrade is part of Good Sammy’s broader transformation, as we continue rolling out accessibility improvements across our network. Most recently we completed upgrades at our Osborne Park and Subiaco retail stores and opened a new store location in Bunbury. Upgrades included accessible toilets, ramps, automatic doors and improved operational spaces – ensuring our commitment to inclusion extends to every site, every team and every customer experience throughout our organisation.

Key accessibility enhancements at Good Sammy’s renovated Canning Vale Head Office

  • Accessible pathway to reception including ramp, grab rails, contrasting paving and tactile pavers
  • Lowered reception desk for wheelchair accessibility
  • Automatic sliding doors throughout key areas
  • Additional universally accessible toilets equipped with automatic doors
  • High-contrast signage with braille plus intuitive icons, accessible fonts, clear wording and colour cues
  • Hearing loops installed in meeting and training rooms
  • Refurbished canteen featuring varied seating, wider aisles, lowered bain-marie and adjustable height tables
  • A dedicated wellness room designed to provide a calming, low-stimulation environment.

With thanks to Lotterywest for supporting the overall redevelopment and the WA Government for supporting the upgrade to our canteen facilities.
