Flatlay of items including jeans, belt, umbrella and leather gloves

As temperatures drop in Perth, it’s time to bust out the fluffy slippers and flannel PJs and sleep with the doona pulled up. It’s also time to take stock of what’s in our wardrobe to see if we’ve got enough warm clothes to take us through the cooler months.

Although WA autumns and winters are mild compared to other parts of the world, those flimsy dresses and sandals just won’t cut it when the chill sets in. So, if your winter wardrobe is looking a little bare, forget the must-have lists by fashion bloggers spruiking the latest designer items. Simply head down to your local Good Sammy and look out for these go-to layering essentials to warm those wardrobe gaps.

Knitwear

1. Knitwear

No winter wardrobe is complete without cosy knitwear. It can be paired with anything from jeans to miniskirts to dressy pants, and on warmer autumn or winter days, it can be draped across the shoulders or tied around the waist for hands-free carrying that also looks cool. Good Sammy has tonnes of knitwear in a wide variety of styles, from cable knit, crew neck and V-neck jumpers, to zip sweaters, turtlenecks, pullovers and cardigans. The colour and style you choose is up to you, but try to look out for wool or wool-blend pieces as they’re warmer, better quality and more durable. If you’re after something fitted, check out the ladies’ or even kids’ sections. If the oversized look is more your thing, go a few sizes larger or check out the menswear section.

Jeans

2. Classic jeans

Jeans are undoubtedly one of the most beloved clothing items for their versatility and staying power. A classic pair of jeans goes with everything, can be worn year-round to most occasions, and makes you feel comfortable and confident all at once. Whether the fit is skinny, baggy, straight, flared, wide leg, bootleg or cropped, there are so many choices when it comes to jeans and Good Sammy has a pair to suit every taste and body type. Ignore denim trends. Instead, try on as many pairs as possible, experimenting with different styles, sizes and colours to find the pair you feel best in and that you know you’ll turn to time and time again. You might be surprised by the results. I was always a skinny jeans gal until I tried on some wide-leg styles and fell in love. Look out for jeans that are 100 per cent cotton or cotton-based as these will last many years and washes. Thicker denim will also keep you warmer in colder temperatures, but if you’re someone who feels the cold easily, you can always wear a pair of leggings or tights under your jeans. No one will ever know. With the amount of denim already in existence, there really is no need to buy new winter jeans – especially when you consider the 1,800 gallons of water that are needed to produce one pair. It’s preloved denim all the way!

Jackets and blazers

3. A blazer or jacket

Blazers and jackets are another trans-seasonal and versatile piece that never go out of style. They can be dressed up or down and worn with everything, from distressed denim to feminine dresses, and they instantly elevate any outfit by adding a polished touch. In winter, they serve as a useful layering piece – either worn over jumpers or under oversized coats, if it’s cold enough. But in all honesty, bulky coats aren’t essential for Perth winters. A blazer or jacket in a weightier fabric like wool, tweed or leather is the only outerwear you need, and there are plenty to choose from at Good Sammy. Neutral colours, like tan, beige, cream, black, grey and navy will go with many of the items you already own, and a relaxed, oversize fit with roomy sleeves will allow you to wear chunkier knitwear underneath and still give you room to move. Play around with different cuts and shapes and once you find The One, it’ll be your go-to piece for years to come.

Puffer vests

4. A puffer vest

Don’t be fooled by the lack of sleeves on these bad boys. Puffer vests work wonders at trapping body heat close to the core and keeping you warm in colder temperatures. They add warmth without bulk, they give ease of movement, and they’re water-resistant. A good pick when you’re going for more of a casual look, and they serve as an essential layering for all types of cooler weather. On warmer days, wear your vest over a T-shirt or button-down shirt. When the weather’s colder, wear it over a jumper or denim jacket. If your vest is in a neutral colour, you should be able to match it with a lot of items from your wardrobe. Or, accessorise with a bright coloured vest to add a statement to your outfit. Good Sammy often stocks puffer vests in a range of colours and sizes, so keep an eye out when you’re next in store.

Boots

5. Weather-proof boots

In WA, it’s not unusual to get a year’s worth of rainfall in the three months of winter. There’s nothing worse than having cold, wet feet and soggy socks, which is why it’s important we have footwear that’s waterproof. When you think of waterproof footwear, your first thought might be gumboots, but let me assure you there are so many other types of boots available at Good Sammy that are not only practical, but also stylish. Combat, biker, western, chelsea, chunky, tall, ankle, flat or heeled; you name the boot, Good Sammy’s probably got it. Best of all, the previous owner has done all the hard work by breaking in the boots for you. Look out for rubber soles as they’re durable and comfortable and won’t make you slip over in the rain. Also keep an eye out for sturdy heels with an in-tact heel cap. Don’t be put off by scuffs or marks. They can easily be removed with shoe polish or a vinegar-soaked rag. You can also use a waterproofing spray to make the boots extra weather resistant and put in some new inner soles to make them extra comfy.

Sneakers

6. Everyday sneakers

When you’re after something more casual than a pair of boots, sneakers are your best bet in Perth’s snowless weather. There’s so much to love about a good pair of sneakers. They’re comfortable, they’re easy to clean and they make any outfit look effortlessly cool. Brands like Converse, Adidas, Puma, New Balance, Reebok and Nike have plenty of wear-with-anything styles and you can find many of these in the Gold Seal section of any Good Sammy. You can find great styles of gently used sneakers in the regular shoe section as well and it’s important to see their potential. A dirty or scuffed pair of light-coloured sneakers can easily come up a treat by throwing them in the wash and scrubbing them with warm soapy water. If you can’t be bothered with that, simply opt for a pair in a darker colour, like black or navy. You can easily replace laces on preloved sneakers and bring added structure and comfort by replacing the inner soles. Though, one thing that can’t be fixed is worn and uneven outer soles. These lack grip and can cause pain by putting greater pressure on the ball of the foot, so always turn the sneakers over to check. Oh, and don’t forget to pack socks for trying on!

Scarves

7. Scarves and hats

Scarves and hats are essential winter accessories. Not only do they look cute and stylish and add fun pops of colour to neutral winter outfits, they also do an excellent job at protecting your head, neck and upper chest from the wind and cold air. Let’s start with scarves. Regular scarves, infinity scarves, snoods and pashminas are perfect choices for winter, and thicker materials, like wool, cashmere, alpaca fleece and jersey will keep you feeling nice and toasty. They come in a range of colours and patterns that you can match or contrast with any outfit and they can be worn multiple ways – either wrapped up tight or draped loosely around the neck. They can also be worn across the shoulders like a shawl or used to cover your mouth or nose when there’s an extra chill in the air. Scarves are an absolute must-have for winter and you’re bound to find the ideal one at Good Sammy. Why not grab a few in various colours, patterns or styles?

Hats

Hats are also perfect for winter, not just the humble knitted beanie, many styles can add a trendy element to a winter outfit. Berets, newsboy hats, fisherman’s caps, fedoras, wide-brim hats, even textured bucket hats are other stylish options for winter, and they’ll keep you warm if they’re made of fabrics like wool, felt, leather, polyester fleece, faux fur or shearling. Acrylic wool is fine too, but be mindful that it can be quite itchy. A good winter hat acts as a stylish lid for our bodies to keep the warmth in. It protects your hair from the rain and is a fantastic solution to a bad hair day. Better still, there are so many preloved beauties waiting to be found at Good Sammy. What’s not to love?
