How to thrift jeans

August not only marks the last month of winter, but also Jeans for Genes Day, held on Friday 4 August. In case you missed it, Jeans for Genes Day is an initiative that’s all about raising awareness and funds for research on genetic diseases and birth defects, like Down syndrome, cancer, cystic fibrosis and genetic blindness. People can show their support by wearing jeans and casual wear to school or work and donating money to the cause.

So, why not take this opportunity to rock your favourite pair of jeans or maybe find some new ones? But let’s be clear, by “new” we don’t mean buying something from a fast fashion retailer. The last thing we need to do is fuel the demand for more denim production. The truth is, the denim industry is one of the worst offenders when it comes to harming the environment. It uses enormous amounts of water for cotton growth (shockingly it takes up to 10,000 litres of water to produce a single pair of jeans) and it relies on toxic chemicals for dyeing and finishing denim which contaminates the soil and waterways.

So, instead of feeding the fast fashion monster, thrift your jeans from Good Sammy. Not only will it you save some cash, but you'll also be doing your bit to help the environment and creating employment opportunities for people with disability.

Whether the fit is skinny, baggy, straight, flared, wide leg, bootleg or cropped, there are so many options when it comes to jeans and Good Sammy has a pair to suit every taste and body type. So, where to start? To help you on your next op shopping trip, we asked some of Perth’s thrift-fluencers to share their tips on how to find the perfect pair of second-hand jeans.

1. Find inspiration

@style_meraki

Sylvia from @style_meraki suggests using apps like Pinterest and Instagram to gather inspiration on the specific style of jeans and preferred labels you want to find. This way you'll have a virtual catalogue on your phone, which can make the search less overwhelming and give you ideas on how to style your "new" thrifted jeans. It's a smart way to be prepared and have a clearer vision while shopping.

2. Try, try and try on some more

Trying on multiple pairs of jeans is the key to finding the perfect fit while op shopping, says Rosie from @stylish.agency and Jessica from @my.second.hand.life. They both stress the importance of being persistent and patient during the process. Jeans are highly individualised, and what may be trendy might not suit your body type, so don't hesitate to experiment with different styles. Keep in mind that second-hand denim may have taken on the shape of its previous owner, but don't let that deter you from trying them on. Also remember that sizing can vary among brands, so don't rely solely on the label; pay attention to the actual fit and how they feel on. Trying on various styles of jeans allows you to discover pairs that genuinely match your style and fit preferences, and you might be surprised by which pair becomes your perfect match. Oh, and don’t forget to check that the zips work!

3. Look out for vintage labels

According to Zoe from @myloveofpreloved and Jade from @yeahvintage it’s all about vintage labels. Jade always keeps an eye out for old-school Levi’s made in Australia or the USA because they’re thicker and better quality than modern styles and last forever. Look out for that iconic leather patch on the back and a paper tag on the inside of the jeans to spot the real deal. Here’s a tip: they’re often found in the men’s section. Zoe's all about funky vintage styles, cuts, and washes. She recommends looking through the whole rack, not just your size section, because vintage jeans generally run a lot smaller. She also recommends checking out the men’s.

4. Go to a tailor

@_thriftedbychris

@_thriftedbychris agrees that high-quality denim can often be found in the men’s section. She says to focus on finding jeans that fit your hips and thighs, as the waistband can easily be taken in. In fact, a skilled tailor can transform any pair of jeans into a super flattering fit. Thrifted jeans, even after alterations, are more sustainable and budget-friendly choice compared to buying new, and they'll stand the test of time.

5. Customise them yourself

@style.decoy

In your thrifting adventures, you might come across a pair of jeans that are the perfect fit but the wrong colour. Don’t put them back on the rack. Instead, take inspiration from Edwina at @style.decoy and dye them! She treats second-hand denim as a blank canvas and makes it her own by dyeing, cutting, ripping and adding creative embellishments,  like pins and patches. It's a fantastic and easy way to add your personal touch to second-hand jeans. Embrace your inner DIY enthusiast and let your imagination run wild to make your thrifted jeans truly one-of-a-kind.

6. Search the men’s section

It’s come up a few times in this article; shopping in the men’s section is a wise choice for men and women. Men’s jeans often feature a looser fit and are generally thicker, making them more durable and comfortable. You can also discover unique washes, distressing patterns, and higher rise options that may not be as readily available in the women's section. If you're into that trendy oversized or "boyfriend" look, the men’s section is the place to be. Don't be afraid to break free from the norm and embrace the gender fluidity of fashion.

Op shopping for jeans is a super fun and eco-friendly way to find unique pieces for your wardrobe while supporting great causes. Arm yourself with the thrift-fluencers' tips and head to your nearest Good Sammy to start your hunt for the perfect pair. Try on different styles until you find the right fit, knowing your sustainable choices are making a positive impact on the environment and helping provide opportunities for people with disability.

Once you've scored your ideal jeans, proudly rock them on Jeans for Genes Day and make a donation to support research on genetic diseases. You'll be a style icon with a heart of gold, blending fashion, sustainability, and giving back!
