Lucy Smith is a name you won’t forget any time soon. In case you missed it, the 19-year-old Good Sammy employee from Bunbury received the last golden ticket on last night’s episode of Australian Idol, earning her a coveted spot in the Top 50.
Lucy caught the judges’ eye with her quirky op shop style before she even started singing. Wearing purple velvet pants, a black camisole, black boots and a raspberry floppy top hat to complement her long black hair and cat-eye glasses, Judge Meghan Trainor was quick to comment on her outfit, saying she looked “so cool”. Lucy thanked her in her softly spoken voice and explained that she works in an op shop, so she always finds funky things to wear.
Proving to have not just a stand-out look, but the voice too, Lucy went on to wow the judges with a haunting rendition of Pleasure and Pain by The Divinyls. She received four resounding yeses from the judges – all of them sold by Lucy’s captivating vocals and unique style. After she left the room, Harry Connick Junior told the other judges he was excited to see Lucy continue to be her authentic self. “I have a feeling she’s going to stay exactly like that”, he said. “Other people will try to conform, but she’s not going to try. She’s just going to do her thing.”
Clutching the last golden ticket in her hand, Lucy called her Good Sammy co-worker and mentor, Rhonda to share the exciting news. After all, it was she who encouraged Lucy to attend the Perth auditions. Rhonda, who Lucy describes as a ballsy and confident mother-figure, was overjoyed, telling Lucy she was “a star in the making.”
