Op shops are known for their hidden gems, but the true treasures of Good Sammy stores are the amazing volunteers who contribute their time, effort, and skills to a worthy cause.

National Volunteer Week, 15-21 May, is all about recognising the good that volunteers do, celebrating the positive impact they have, and encouraging others to do the same. This year’s theme, The Change Makers, honours volunteers who seek to drive social change and make the world a better place.

Good Sammy volunteers are definitely change makers in their own right. They are the backbone of the organisation, helping to create employment opportunities for Western Australians with disability, while also supporting a circular economy. The volunteers at Good Sammy come from all walks of life, and they work together every day to make a real difference in the world. Without them, Good Sammy simply wouldn't be able to survive.

But volunteering at Good Sammy isn't just about doing good for others - it's also about doing good for yourself. Studies have shown that volunteering can have a positive effect on mental health, boosting self-esteem and reducing stress and anxiety.

Take one of Good Sammy's shining stars, Rosemary, for example. Rosemary started volunteering in the South Lake store after giving up her full-time job due to health issues. She missed the social aspect of work, and volunteering has given her a reason to laugh and forget about her health concerns. “I’d go mad if I was stuck at home, all day,” she says. “Volunteering has taught me to work at a slower pace, and it makes me happy. It’s entertaining too. I’m always laughing about something.”

Plus, volunteering can lead to future job opportunities, with many employers considering volunteer work just as valuable as paid work experience.

If you're looking for a way to make a difference and gain valuable experience, then volunteering at Good Sammy is a great option. There are many opportunities available in all areas of the organisation, from helping in the op shops or warehouse, to hospitality, events, ecommerce or IT, as well as virtual options. If you're unsure what role would be right for you, click here to enquire or speak to Karen Andrews, Good Sammy’s Volunteer Coordinator, to discuss a role that suits your skills and interests. Phone 9463 0500 Monday to Friday (8am-4pm) or email volunteers@goodsammy.com.au.
