In 2023, North Metropolitan TAFE fashion students teamed up with Good Sammy and Second Life Markets for a remarkable upcycling project.

Back in April, second-year TAFE students were tasked with breathing new life into preloved materials found in the Good Sammy Factory Outlet. This project had the TAFE students transform a pair of jeans, a button-down shirt, and two ties into wearable pieces that could be worn time and again.

The results were impressive and diverse, with the students reimagining the materials into funky skirts, tops, pants and bags. These creations were then showcased and up for sale at the June Second Life Markets.

Lecturer Rachel Nicholaidis shared, “We got lots of positive feedback on the day. The people who purchased items really love them”.

One customer, who purchased a pleated mini skirt made from jeans, a men’s shirt and a tie, was chuffed to find something that was on-trend but still one-of-a-kind. She said, “A few of my friends have pleated skirts, but nothing as cool as this. I love it!”

Good Sammy is delighted to have supported this project with North Metro TAFE fashion and design students and commends their commitment to sustainable practices and textile waste education.

Upcycling is one of the best ways to keep your wardrobe fresh while conserving raw materials. Whether you’re an upcycler yourself, or keen to add some unique creations to your wardrobe, we hope this project inspires you!
