Good Sammy is delighted to be a 2023 beneficiary of the Channel 7 Telethon Trust!

A generous grant of $131,325 from Telethon will support Good Sammy to deliver traineeships in 2023 for 15 high school students with disability.

Through our Explore Work Program, students in Years 10-12 will participate in paid work experience, training and other opportunities. Graduates of the program will receive a certified traineeship in Retail, Business Administration or Supply Chain and the opportunity of future employment.

In partnership with schools, participating students gain critical skills and confidence within a supportive social enterprise environment as a pathway to employment.

Good Sammy Chief Executive Officer Kane Blackman thanked the board of Trustees at Telethon for their generous support.

“The support provided to us by Telethon will be, without question, life changing for the students who participate, as well as for their families,” Mr Blackman said.

“This program is so important, as young people (15-24) with disability are twice as likely to be unemployed as those aged 25-64.

“The lack of work experience or community service opportunities is a barrier to development and employment of young people with disability. More than 90% of working-age people with disability who are unemployed report difficulty finding work and the lack of skills, education and insufficient work experience make up 59% of the reasons for that difficulty.

“Through our Explore Work Program, Good Sammy actively engages with students to help prepare them for workforce opportunities. It all starts at school and, by providing skill building and work experience for students with disability, Good Sammy supports and empowers them to improve their prospects of finding and maintaining employment in a field that excites them.”

Established in 1968, Telethon has been created by and belongs to the community of Western Australia who, over five decades, have generously donated more than $500 million to ensure a better life for children now and in the future.

The Channel 7 Telethon Trust is a registered charity, governed by a Board of Trustees, and exists on a day to day basis because of the generosity of Seven West Media including Channel Seven Perth, The West Australian and The Sunday Times.
